You are toned out for a report of a vehicle fire, 123 Jubly Lane, nearest cross of Mountain Road, caller was on cell phone and lost service, could not get more info for you at this time.

Weather and Time; Its Thursday Night at around 1:30 AM, its cool at about 30 degrees, no wind, no precipitation, skies are clear and its November. The first person to respond to this scenario will be the Lieutenant on the first due engine and you have a crew of 3, a driver and 2 firefighters packed up. You have a truck coming with a 4 minute eta and they have 5, a driver, officer, and 3 firefighters. You have 500 gallons of water with a 1000 GPM pump and 40 gallon CAFS, the hose bed is what you are used to.
The truck has a 100 foot straight stick rear mount and full compliment of ground ladders.

When I was asked to be a moderator of this section of forums, I was also asked to post some interesting and thought provoking subjects. So here goes.. I am about to make a statement that you night find quite controversial and thats what I am after. I would like for you to first tell me whether you agree or dis-agree with the statement and second tell me why. Before you answer though, I would like for you to think about the "time" element.

Statement: "Vertical ventilation operations except for potential backdraft situations, are a waste of time and have very little positive impact on the interior attack crew, search and rescue crew or trapped victims".

Let me hear from you..
Good point too brother, no one has bothered to check to see if anyone is inside. In the initial post I stated that there is a car in the driveway, and the doors are locked....??? Could that mean someone is inside? It could, but no one has initiated a search for possible occupants yet.

Id also have the fiirst team in their search kill the power in the house incase it is electrical in nature. have the ladder crew start positive pressure ventilation in my opinion I would not vent the roof because we do not know what the cause of smoke is and would not want to cause more damage to the house if not necessary. Once the heat source is located then you'll know what you'll have to do to extinguish the fire.

Thats what I was looking for, use of the TIC to find the source. Great job turk!
You find the heat source coming from the wall around the chimney pipe. They use a pellet stove to supplement their heat source and the pipe goes directly through the wall above the stove. Its all hot around the pipe, about 600-800 degrees on th TIC. The heat gets worse with the PPV use.
_________________
Brian Jones

Investigators are looking into the cause of a fire that killed a 54-year-old woman early Friday morning.

Smoke was reported at the Buckingham Gardens complex at South Ironton Street and Kentucky Avenue just before 2 a.m. Firefighters arrived six minutes later.

While extinguishing flames in the bedroom firefighters found a 54-year-old woman dead in her bed. Her identity has not been released, but neighbors said she was wheelchair-bound.

"It sounds like she lived there alone. The only apartment in question is the one on fire. We did have some smoke damage to an adjacent apartment," said Aurora Fire Capt. Mark Turley.

A walker was found next to the victim's bed. The victim's neighbor said waking up to the sound of sirens and the sight of flames outside her apartment terrified her.

"I looked outside and saw a gurney and somebody zipping up a body bag," said resident Cherry Gale. "It messed me up. Right after that, my sister called because she said she knew it wasn't me because it was a woman in a wheelchair. Shortly after that, my sister-in-law called me to make sure that I was OK."

The victim's first-floor, one-bedroom apartment was destroyed. No others were damaged because firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in 18 minutes, officials said.

Residents of five other units were forced from their apartments and used a clubhouse for temporary shelter.

Buckingham Gardens is owned by the Aurora Housing Authority, which provides shelter for the elderly and disabled. After the fire, housing authority staffers mobilized quickly to reach out to the tight-knit community of 120 units.

"We went door to door this morning. We knocked on every door here, spoke to each one of our residents and made sure they were OK. We invited them to the main office for some cookies, donuts and just some comfort," said Linda Jaster, with the housing authority.

Unfortunately the woman who reported the fire was calling from her brother’s cellular phone and hung up before giving the address. Dispatchers traced the call to the brothers home (not the location of the fire) and station 6 was dispatched to the scene. While in route another call was made from a neighbor giving the correct location and the station 2 was dispatched. The initial reporting victim unfortunately never escaped her home.

I lay asleep, tucked soundly amidst my brothers, within my tiny cot
How is it now my heart is racing?
Running
Smile drawn wide, for the bay?
The once rolled bunkers over steal lined boots march directly up my trembling legs
Rubber houses dangle in their lonesome
Steal doors draw shut
Truck two proudly hallowed in darkened summer nights
Submerged by the rising fog spewing from the sewers
Illuminated in scurrying red and blue
Horns and trumpets ring out, the sirens song drawing nearer
Flames dancing proud in the moonlit sky, smoke ballets to the heavens
Fear engulfs, the air horns roars
The heat draws nearer, warning enemies
My shoulder flashing red rings out, wood screaming, and anger unleashed
Men are running, footsteps pounding, saw teeth shouting, Men are crying
The air runs thin, my heart grows heavy
Men are running, fire crying
Darkness draws nearer, fear grows deeper
Time is failing, night is falling, light is drawing in
Now midnight shoes shuffle solemnly down the carpet walkway,
not my Jordan’s or Air walks, not my usual pair at all,
these shoes are special, and not worn without consideration.
The carpet is gone
the grass now beneath me,
black dress shoes in grass, this is not common.
I must look up at what lie before me,
still I gaze down at the black shoes below me.
The time has come for my head to rise,
Should I wait any longer my chance will subside.
I fear of the thought of what lies beneath these black shoes,
What soon will lie beneath as well.
The tears they fall,
dotting my polished black shoes with salty regret.
Firefighter Safety :: How Much Caution Should You use at Car Fires?

Subject: How Much Caution Should You use at Car Fires?
Posted: May 02, 2008 12:22 (GMT -6)
As a regular subscriber to the "Secret List" for some time now, I for one am getting pretty frustrated reading about all of the senseless injuries or even DEATHS resulting from car fires. My question for all of you is........WHY?

Why is it that when we, as firefighters, still respond to these calls WITHOUT full PPE, and without caution? People forget that there are many hazards associated with car fires and their extinguishment. Lets try and name all of the hazards for car fires, shall we? I will start us off with a couple and leave the rest to you. Lets try and get a full list going so we all can LEARN and REMEMBER so the next time we respond to a car fire it will be fresh in our minds.

Hazards For Car Fires

1- Shock absorbing bumpers. Thats right, most cars today come equipped with bumpers mounted on Shocks which mount to the frame, to absorb more impact on the minor fender benders. What happens to hydraulic fluid under pressure when it gets heated?...........????? Should we be standing in front of these missiles attempting to hack at the Hood to get it open? Or should we reconsider a side approach and bending the hood up from the side of the car to allow access to the engine compartment?

2- Plastic Components used in the engines and the cars interior. What happens to plastic when it burns? Is the smoke generated from burning plastic something we all went to ingest a healthy dose of into our lungs so that when we are 70 years old we need a portable ventilator to keep our breathing? Does it take that long to don an air pack? Is it realy that inconvenient to put one on and have to refill the bottle later at the station? Is anyone else getting tired of receiving dirty looks when you do put one on at car fires? Always wear your air people. Its not like its the olden days where everything is made of wood or metal and you could get away without it. There are a lot of plastics and substitute materials being used to increase efficiency and comfort.

3-?????? whats next? Lets come up with as many as we can and realy build a list.

Thanks
